Hugo Toro is a 32-year-old French-Mexican architect who trained in Vienna, the United States and France. Graduating from the Penninghen school in Paris in 2012, this raw and nomadic talent has a passion for travelling. He made it his main source of inspiration. Afterwards, he settled in France to develop his architecture and interior design projects: restaurants (Grand Café Capucine, La Scène...) or private flats such as the Léopold. From Ramatuelle to London, from the Gigi restaurants to the Booking Office in St Pancras station, Hugo Toro's art is expressed across many borders.

For Hugo Toro, what makes his works unique and distinctive is the piece of history that each one contains. Hugo Toro's aim is to convey the history of places through his work, a history that is both narrative and physical. He also likes to mix contrasts, to associate opposites, to reconcile raw and noble materials, pale and bright colours, styles and genres. His attention to detail and his desire to achieve perfect simplicity make his projects spectacular treasures.

From Tom Ford's A Single Man to the warmth of the 70s to the contemporary singularity of the Euphoria series, Hugo Toro relies on his multiple inspirations to create unique places.

"My passion for storytelling comes from my mother, who is of Mexican origin. I inherited from her a taste for stories and colours. The nomadic side comes from my upbringing, I have been travelling since childhood: to Italy, Mexico, Brazil... Then I continued my studies in Austria and the United States. Today, I can't think of anything more inspiring than a train journey to draw and shape my ideas."

Hugo Toro: Invitation to travel to the Klay Saint Sauveur restaurant

"I mix project sketches with more abstract drawings that I make on an iPad or in notebooks, like travel diaries."

For this Parisian restaurant renovated in 2016, Hugo Toro worked in collaboration with Maxime Liautard. The décor, which is more than sumptuous, is in keeping with the Art Deco style typical of Hollywood landscapes. As in Miami, we find luxury, palm trees and relaxation. Hugo Toro was also inspired by the Deauville club and its Mediterranean travels. The cocktails are as fresh as the house style in this particularly trendy place. The fresco by Julien Colombier creates an almost dreamlike tropical world. "Like a dancer who trains every day, I make a point of looking around me to capture a movement, a colour, an image that I might be able to use again one day. "

Hugo Toro: Writing in the soul for the Leopold flat

"I invent stories, I dream about future projects, which helps me to structure my thoughts and make the spaces I am going to create tangible."

For this Parisian flat, Hugo Toro let his imagination run wild, creating a magnificent décor, with soft lines and golden colours. A fervent admirer of the art of the stage, Hugo Toro wanted to design this flat like a theatre box.

The use of natural materials makes this flat a warm and soothing place. Oak and chequered parquet flooring enhance the interior. Warm colours such as the burgundy leather of the sofa create a comforting atmosphere. Sublimated by the light, this custom-made interior still shows the singularity of Hugo Toro's compositions.

Hugo Toro: Timelessness and purity at the Italian restaurant Gigi Paris Montaigne

"The places I create, we don't know if they are from thirty years ago, two years ago or tomorrow. In my opinion, what makes them strong is the way they embody subliminal memories in a contemporary way. "

This sunny, golden restaurant is an ode to Italian gastronomy and Parisian life. With its panoramic view over the whole of Paris, the Gigi restaurant has become a must-see address in the capital. With its subdued lighting, yellow tables made of Sienna marble and a stone floor created in the manner of a multicoloured opus incertum, there is no doubt that Hugo Toro is a master of his trade.
