Art Deco has made its return to our homes. This chic and avant-garde style continues to draw us in. From its presence in the fashionable Parisian scene, it has become central to our desires. How can you decorate your home in such a style? Let’s take a trip down memory lane as we take a look at where Art Deco comes from, before deciphering its established codes.

Back to the 1920s

After emerging during the interwar period and making a grand appearance in Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s famous novel The Great Gatsby, this style of decorative art dates back to an eponymous international exhibition which took place in 1925. Art Deco represents modernity and is something completely new compared to Art Nouveau : out with crammed and flower-patterned decor, in with symmetrical shapes and glamour !

Geometrical shapes, the core elements

Art Deco is characterised by geometrical shapes such as circles, straight or curved lines as well as other graphic patterns that allow for a clean look. Why don’t you opt for a stylised and geometric wallpaper like this one with a feather pattern? It will unquestionably bring an elegant touch to your interior walls. You can even choose furniture that associates geometric figures and brass such as this bone inlay dresser made out of mango wood. This ingenious combination will allow you to further bring out that vintage look.

Materials that are both appealing and warm

Opt for materials such as wrought iron, ebony or the ever-stylish marble. Be daring by going for flashiness thanks to gold decorations from floor to ceiling that will cover your chair legs, mirrors, lampshades, pendant lights and other candelabra. As for the wallpaper, you should go for velvet whether it be made from cotton, wool or even silk. Do not overlook the benefits of good quality synthetic velvet, as this fabric is much more resistant and easier to maintain, especially when it comes to fragile items such as seating. This comes in handy when choosing a velvet sofa which promises to ooze sophistication, thus embellishing your living room. As for steel furniture, pick brass over its lower-end golden substitutes - brass is at the very heart of Art Deco. If put here and there in small amounts, it will bring elegance and personality to your decor. As an alternative to marble, smoked glass works perfectly as a top on your coffee or bedside tables.

Dark or pastel colours

Colours are fundamental in order to pull off your decor in the style of Art Deco ! They reflect the glamour that is so unique to the roaring twenties. Choose dark shades such as emerald green, deep blue, brown, grey or a neutral colour such as black. If you wish to soften your decor by lightening it up, embrace pastel shades.

Don’t forget to use your imagination!

Art Deco calls on your inner creativity, so don’t hesitate to have fun when choosing motifs for your curtains or wallpaper. Think about adding a few accessories such as retro brass pendant lights, feathers, mirrors or velvet cushions. Should you desire to be even more original, you could even go bold with a cane screen.
